Chinderella – it’s an orthognathic fairytale, you see.

And then I was given a surgery date.

-Six months, she said.

-What do you mean, six months?

-Don’t be impatient now, we need to get everything just perfectly in place for…

-no, you don’t understand, it’s just that it’s too soon, I’m not psychologically prepared for this at all, I thought  you’d say a year or something, and anyway I can’t just leave work in.. that’d be February, just can’t with the exams and the orals and  and and and

-I’ll tell you one thing: I’ve been an orthodentist for 25 years, and I’ve worked with all kinds of surgeons. Some good ones and I met a few idiots, too. And I’ve got to tell you, this one you’re seeing, well, he is The Best. You can do this with your eyes closed.

Just what I needed to hear.

Later that day I met my surgeon for the second time and by the time I left I was calm, yet elated. He went through the entire procedure with me again – I knew all that already, thank you the internet! and reassured me the best he could, which is  rather a lot.

I just have to tell people at work that I’ll be disappearing around the end of May, then. I plan to get all the exams sorted out, leave everything in top shape, and not come back til the beginning of the next academic year. And no thoughts along the lines of ‘if I come back’.
